5 Card Draw is a game where observation is of vital importance. In other variants of poker, players have information available to them at any time in the form of exposed cards. For example, in Texas Hold’em only 2 of 7 cards are hidden, in 5 card stud only 1 of 5 cards is concealed. While observation is important to piecing together hand holdings in other forms of poker, it’s far more important in 5 Card Draw where there are no exposed cards.

While observing 5 Card Draw opponents, things to look for are betting patterns, drawing patterns and tricky plays. This brings us to another important winning draw poker skill: deception. It’s important both to use deceptive plays, and to observe the deceptive plays of your opponents.

An example of a deceptive play is a strategy called covering. An example of this occurs when a player holds one pair, but chooses to draw two cards rather than three. This is important for two reasons, the first is that novice player assumes this player has trips and will then be more likely to fold when holding less than trips themselves. The second reason is so that when a player is forced to call a raise with trips, he can draw two and and observant opponent might put him on only a pair because they’ve noticed he is a player who near always covers.

To look at the example above, covering with trips can often be profitable. When a player draws one card it’s often assumed they have two pair, a straight draw or a flush draw. Generally it’s wise to aggressively raise and then draw one when holding trips, two pair, open ended straight draws and four cards to a flush. Previously, however, we mentioned that having a history of covering can be profitable when being forced to call a raise with trips. To put this into an example: you raise with trip 8’s and a player you have limited knowledge of who has so far played tight, reraises the pot. If your image has been LAG (loose aggressive) you might consider re-raising here, but if your image is not a factor, you’re often faced with a tough decision. This is a spot where it is often correct to simply call and draw 3.

In the example above, drawing two gives you the best chance to improve if you’re not already good, and by just calling you’ve controlled the size of the pot, and you can showdown for less.
